Using Permanent Magnet Motors In Variable Speed Appliances
There are any number of electric motors in your house; just open up any appliance and look inside. Even your DVD player and your hand mixers use motors. All these domestic motors run on electricity.
There are three types of electric motor. Universal brush motors have high torque and variable speed; you'll find them in drills and washing machines. Induction motors are silent, safe and reliable. They are found in refrigerators and pumps. New motors coming on the market, on the other hand, try to combine the best of both these worlds. These new motors are very exciting because they combine the high torque of brush motors with the silent durability of brushless.
Micro controllers have long been used for the interface functions of modern appliances. They are just now beginning to be used to control the motors themselves. The advantages in energy savings, silent operation and simplicity are becoming more and more important as technology advances and our ecological needs increase.
In applications such as drills, vacuum cleaners, mowers and even the Poulan chainsaw, variable speed is the key. Controlling the speed can increase power efficiency by as much as 30 percent compared to fixed-speed units. Designers can also use smaller, less-expensive motors, lowering the overall price.
For washing machines, an induction motor won't work very well because the controllers are too expensive. But new magnet technology is offering alternatives such as the permanent-magnet synchronous motor with sensorless controls and semiconductor technology. These new motors run at lower speeds and save energy. They run at cooler temperatures and are very quiet, creating less waste heat and noise that needs to be abated.
It is easy to see why permanent magnet motors are gaining in popularity. They also use less raw materials. Less copper and steel mean lower cost and lower costs mean lower prices. Not only is the market price not as influenced by the price of commodities, but as their popularity grows, these motors will get less and less expensive. They are already used to vibrate cell phones and power cars.
Of course, these wonders won't work in every appliance. You won't find one in your Homelite chainsaw any time soon, for example. But you will start seeing them more and more in refrigerators, drills, washing machines, pumps. With the high torque of traditional motors combined with the silent dependability of an induction motor, we have a perfect match.
Where is the Engine Speed Control Valve in a 1999 Mercury Mystique?
My car is not working properly. I had it checked on the computer and they told that the Speed control was not working properly. Where does this go? What does it do?
The idle speed control is an electrical valve that varies the idle speed of the engine according to what loads might be put on it, such as a/c or the power steering being turned. The usual problem with them is when they get gummed up and won't control the idle allowing the engine to stall. They can sometimes be cleaned and restored to proper function. Sometimes they need to be replaced. Not sure of exact location on your car, but should be located near or on the throttle body.
