I would like to better understand the function of a pre-aligner and elevator in a semiconductor front end tool. Can someone explain their functions in very plain english. Thank you.
Prealigner is used in most, if not all wafer processing equipment. It is used align wafer X, Y and rotation offset. It is called prealign because there might be another more precise alignment.
For example, a machine needs to do laser marking on dies on wafer. The prealigner will first do a coarse alignment, then the machine will do a more precise die level alignment before marking on the die. There is a need for this 2 tier alignment because the machine will have limited alignment capability. Meaning to say, it can't do die level alignment without doing a coarse alignment first by the prealigner.
