Skype Files For IPO Just One Year After Spin-off
Just one year after spinning off from EBay, Skype has filed the first paperwork with the SEC for an initial public offering. The filings integrated some numbers which were surprising to industry watchers. Users are hoping the newly-complicated structure behind Skype will not impact the service they love.
Financial health revealed in Skype IPO paperwork
There is an estimate that the Skype IPO could be worth $ 100 million or more. The Skype SEC filings revealed revenue and income that worries some analysts. In just the last six months, the business reports $ 406 million in revenue. The net income of Skype was reported at only $ 13 million. A 3 percent net margin means that Skype is not growing quickly, though it is growing. The nine percent of users that really pay for the Skype service pay an average of $ 96 each year.
Skype's new ownership structure
The ownership structure behind Skype could be complicated following the IPO. American shares are being offered within the business, although it is situated in Luxemborg. Private investors and employees are both going to be considered owners of the company also. Skype S.A. will issue the stocks and be owned by these groups. This company will own reasonably equal parts Skype Global Holdco and Skype Global. These two holding companies could be split – into Skype, Inc. and Springboard Finance, L.L.C.. Springboard Finance, L.L.C., will own and operate 13 operating corporations like Skype Software and Skype Sweden .
How the Skype IPO might change things
Skype claims that it's Original Public Offering will be used mostly to raise funds. Offering stocks can, at times, fundamentally change a business. Skype is already making deals with wireless carriers and also the iPhone application is proving popular. Nothing is for certain yet, so Skype's 500 million users will have to wait to see what the effect of the Skype IPO will be.
