The Popular Saturn Ion
Launched in 2003, Saturn Ion is one of the many car models manufactured by General Motors; it came as a replacement for the Saturn S Series, the first line of production since the beginnings of the division. Statistics indicate that, Saturn Ion pleased users more than any other compact car sold on the American market, and this is the reason why it was sold for such a long time, till 2007 when it was replaced by Saturn Astra. This vehicle relied on the famous General Motors Delta platform and it came with a standard DOHC Ecotec I4 engine that gave 140 horsepower.
The position of the instrument panel was pretty striking in the interior design of Saturn Ion, thus instead of the traditional location behind the steering wheel specific for most other car concepts, it occupied a frontal position in the center of the dashboard. The Saturn Ion varieties available on the market included the coupe and the sedan. The modernity this car enjoyed was explainable by the gearbox that allowed room for five forward gears modified to fit to the regular manual gearbox. The fuel consume was positively influenced by such a gearbox structure with the potential to improve acceleration too. Moreover, with Saturn Ion, the planetary gear set no longer caused overheating issues.
General Motors upgraded the first Saturn Ion design according to the requirements of a superior more powerful Red Line issued in 2004. The model was imagined as a sportier car with a more powerful engine of 205 horsepower, a stiffer suspension and re-valved shock absorbers; the model relied on a 2.0 liter Ecotec engine known as the LSJ. 2004 also saw the launching of a limited Saturn Ion edition with upgrades both in outer and interior design. The price was higher, but the cosmetic look was surely different. Only three color options were available: black onyx, chili pepper red and electric blue.
Until 2007, several additional changes were made for the Saturn Ion engine power and interior design. Some of the varieties were also discontinued because of various technical issues that made their reliability questionable: this was the case with the Aisin model. It was during this time that Saturn Ion gained a negative reputation because of the bad publicity received from discontented reviewers. General Motors announced an upgrade with the re-launched Saturn Ion in 2008, pictures of the new model even circulated on the Internet, but eventually the manufacturer dropped the concept and turned to a re-badging. It was time for Saturn Aura to emerge.
Database design: Too complex for me?
I have a design project that I cannot conquer. I need to design a card datbase to for the Magic: The Gathering card game. You do not have to be familiar with the game.
Each card has a unique name and possibly should be the primary means of looking up a record.
Each card has the following properties:
card name
card type
set
mana cost
card text
oracle text
price
The problem I am having is with the set field. Set refers to the number of time and names that the card was printed in. For instance, card APPLE could be printed in set Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Ro but card ORANGE was only printed in Alpha and card NUTS were printed in Alpha,Omega. The set field is variable and could contain any number of sets. There are a finite number of sets however.
I can't figure out how to set up the database to contain these elements. Please help me.
Question: How should these databse be formatted?
Please give me the answer in mysql format if possible. Thank you so much.
OK, what you need here is a relational database with a minimum of two tables, although three would be better.
You create a table with all the card details except for the set. I personally wouldn't have the card name as the primary key and would create a simple one myself.
Next you create a table with all the set details. Now it may not be a table with a lot of fields but it will help to have the information in a separate table.
The third table is the link table where you make an entry for each card and each set it appears in. For example in this table you would store Apple - Alpha; Apple - Beta; Apple - Gamma etc.
Hope this makes sense.
