A Closer Look At Engine Control Unit
Remapping your vehicle’s ECU (engine control unit), on first impression, these words alone seems to suggest a very sophisticated procedure that only professional automotive technicians are qualified to do. This isn’t necessarily true however, and even your average do it yourself mechanic can attempt such feat given an arsenal of modern technology available to us. Remapping your vehicle’s ECU offers a host of benefits in terms of performance. Your vehicle’s engine can be made more efficient thereby producing additional torque and become much more economical in terms of fuel consumption. All these can be achieved by such a procedure.
Before we jump right in to it though, it is best to educate ourselves about what an ECU really is. In a nutshell, an ECU refers to a software program which are connected to sensors installed all over the vehicle that measures performance parameters such as fuel consumption, throttle position, crank position, ignition timing and many more just mention a few. These sensors relay information to the ECU which will analyze the data and then send back additional instructions if necessary to the respective systems in an effort to optimize their performance.
Having mentioned this, you may be wondering why there is a need to remap your ECU. The reason behind this is tied to the fact that vehicle manufacturers do not always setup their ECU at high performance levels. The logic may sound weird to you but the fact is that not all vehicle owners have the need or desire for high performance engines like clymer manual.

To do ECU remapping, you actually just need to overwrite the existing software and update it with a more improved one. The process is very much similar to updating your software on the computer. A new and updated version of 06' crf450r carberator adjustment is seen to be much faster and more efficient. The same is true with the ECU. You just need to hook up your computer containing the tuned software and serial port on your ECU. There are several programs on the market that would allow you to create or customize your vehicle’s ECU. For starters, one that would automatically read your vehicle’s tuning profile and make appropriate recommendations would be highly advisable. Some may offer you a choice between power and efficiency. Personally, I would prefer the fine balance between both. A word of warning though is that you shouldn’t play around with setting up these ECU profiles. One that is done without any knowledge on the parameters would surely damage your vehicle’s engine.

How long should it take to replace the ECU -engine control unit in an Aprilia SR50 scooter? YR2001
I'm wondering if I was overcharged as it took the repair place 3 hrs to replace my ECU. Thanks for your help.
Well, they may have had to reprogram it for your specific vehicle and a total of 3 hours labor sounds reasonable then. They are also supposed to test to make sure none of your computer actuated solenoids etc were shorted which would have caused the original failure. So there's more to it than meets the eye. All that applies to an automobile. But a scooter?
